Leaders Urge Nevada to Pass AB 413

(Las Vegas) – Today, economic development leaders from the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance announced their support for AB 413, a bill currently being considered by the Nevada Legislature.

AB 413 is enabling legislation that would give the Clark County Board of Commissioners the opportunity to implement fuel tax indexing in Clark County. All counties in Nevada have been granted permission from the Nevada Legislature to consider indexing their fuel taxes – except Clark County.  If the legislature passes AB 413, it could mean that Southern Nevada could raise more than $800 million in road construction funding for Clark County and create more than 11,000 jobs.

“In order to grow our economy, we need an excellent infrastructure to move goods and people efficiently throughout the valley,” said Glenn Christenson, chairman of the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance. “Developing the infrastructure we need for the 21st century will result in the creation of a very significant number of high paying jobs in Southern Nevada. In addition, we’ve been at a competitive disadvantage in Clark County because literally every other county in the state has the ability to address their infrastructure needs. We’ve been at a competitive disadvantage long enough, so I’m calling on the Legislature and the Governor to quickly pass this bill.”

Missy Young, executive vice president of Colocation at Switch, added: “Clark County is the economic engine of this state. We need the infrastructure to keep our economy moving. We need to make sure that our region has its fair share of infrastructure funds so that it can create jobs for our residents. That’s why I’m calling on the Legislature and the Governor to pass AB 413.”

LVGEA President and Chief Executive Officer Tom Skancke said that if Southern Nevada is going to excel in the global economy, we must enhance our connection points both at home and to the world.

“The Legislature and the Governor have the opportunity to create jobs, enhance our global competitiveness, and, quite frankly, show some simple fairness by giving Clark County the same competitive opportunity every other county in the state has: to index its own fuel tax,” Skancke said. “Let’s get this job done.”
