Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance (LVGEA) and UNLV Lee Business School teamed up for the third year on the Outlook ’20 event, providing an in-depth analysis on what to expect from the economy heading into next year on local, national and global levels. Hosted at The M Resort, Outlook ’20 brought together Beacon Economics’ Chris Thornberg, UNLV Professor Stephen Miller and Applied Analysis’ Jeremy Aguero to provide the audience with the data and insight needed to do business in Las Vegas.

The event also took a closer look at the technology industry, presenting highlights and analysis from a new report on the implications that this growing industry is having on the local economy.

  • Dr. Chris Thornberg, Founder of Beacon Economics: Thornberg took a big-picture look at the global economy in 2020. He does not project a recession on the horizon and instead focused on growing issues in the economy due to a lack of workforce growth and labor shortages.
  • Dr. Stephen Miller, UNLV Professor and Director of the Center for Business and Economic Research: Marginally diverging from Thornberg, Miller predicted an economic slowdown. He identified risks to the outlook: changes in international growth, such as in China and emerging market economies, as well as monetary policy and the schedule of interest rate changes.
  • Jeremy Aguero, Principal Analyst of Applied Analysis: Aguero dissected the growing technology industry in Southern Nevada. He suggested it is in this sector–among the fastest-growing in the region–that the community can leverage its strengths to grow for the next 20 years by doubling down on the nationally recognized technology programming.
