The Summer Business Institute (SBI), offered by Clark County, is a competitive program giving high-achieving high school students across the Las Vegas Valley the chance to gain real-world workplace experience. This summer, the Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance (LVGEA) was proud to host three outstanding interns: Colin Acasio (Faith Lutheran High School, Class of ’24), Ryan Cruz (Southwest Career and Technical Academy, Class of ’25), and Andersen Newell (Advanced Technologies Academy, Class of ’25).

To be accepted into SBI, applicants must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA, participate in multiple extracurricular activities, and demonstrate a strong commitment to their future careers. For these students, the program was more than just a summer job—it was an immersive learning experience in economic development, marketing, and professional communication.
“While online resources are incredibly valuable, there’s only so much you can learn without real-world experience,” said Acasio. “Getting the unique experience to see how a business is run at 18 was a valuable perspective and will leave a lasting impact in my future endeavors.“
Hands-On Experience in Economic Development
At LVGEA, interns were introduced to the many moving parts of regional economic development—from attracting and retaining businesses, to investor relations, to showcasing Southern Nevada as a top destination for business relocation and expansion.
Colin Acasio worked on audience targeting strategies and explored programs to streamline internal operations. His next step is pursuing a real estate license, where he plans to apply the insights he gained during his time at LVGEA.
Ryan Cruz contributed his graphic design and writing skills to LVGEA’s biweekly newsletter, HubSpot content updates, website projects, and the organization’s signature annual event, Las Vegas Perspective.
“I’ve only written for my school yearbook, so coming to LVGEA gave me opportunities I normally wouldn’t have,” Cruz shared. “I learned how to write in a professional language, and experiencing an office environment before graduation was invaluable.”
Andersen Newell demonstrated a strong attention to detail while developing LVGEA’s 2026 events calendar. He is ensuring the organization is strategically aligned for the year ahead.
“I felt truly valued knowing my work would have an impact beyond my time here,” said Newell. “It was inspiring to contribute something that will benefit LVGEA long after I’m gone.”
Building Skills for the Future
Throughout the summer, the interns learned to use industry tools such as Meltwater and HubSpot, developed professional etiquette, and strengthened teamwork and collaboration skills. They also witnessed firsthand the scale and diversity of companies LVGEA works with—an eye-opening experience for aspiring young professionals.
“They showed us that we can get things done faster than anticipated, and their skills went beyond what you’d expect from high school students,” said Rita Kubitz, LVGEA Public Relations and Communications Manager. “Having them here pushed me to be better and to learn from their fresh perspectives.”
A Lasting Impact
While their internships lasted only a summer, the contributions of these students will benefit LVGEA well into the future. Their fresh perspectives, technical skills, and enthusiasm for learning not only advanced the organization’s projects but also reinforced the importance of investing in the next generation of leaders.
The Summer Business Institute continues to be a bridge between academic success and professional growth—helping prepare young talent to shape the future of Southern Nevada’s economy.
