Henderson’s Bold Investments Today to Make Lasting Impact

By Richard Derrick, City Manager/CEO, City of Henderson

Part of what makes Henderson a premier City is our focus on developing a strong economy while balancing the desires and quality of life for those who live, learn, work and play in our great City.

We are thrilled to be all-in on economic diversification through smart planning and strategic public-private partnerships that are setting the standard for even more exciting opportunities right here in our City.

One of our points of pride is our Strategic Plan, our roadmap for success, and what you see in Henderson today is the result of our working on that plan, which outlines Economic Vitality as one of the top five priorities. From the Mayor and Council to our Senior Leadership, we are happy to champion a pro-business climate that allows us to cultivate possibilities for a thriving and premier City.

Look no further than the former Henderson Fiesta site as an example of the bold attitude we bring to our projects. Here, we aim to capitalize on Southern Nevada’s exploding sports scene to create a multi-use development anchored by a state-of-the-art indoor multi-use sports facility that will be an amenity for our residents while attracting visitors for regional sports tournaments.

Right now, a facility like this does not exist in Henderson. This vision has been years in the making, starting with our idea to purchase the site of the former Fiesta Casino. When in operation, the Fiesta Henderson was a gateway to the expanding areas of downtown and East Henderson. That site is bursting with opportunity with its high visibility and ease of access to Interstate 11, Interstate 215, and Lake Mead Parkway. We knew it was our responsibility to ensure that area remained a staple for the City and an amenity our residents could enjoy year-round.

At the heart of that bold investment were our residents, which is why we asked them what they wanted to see for the site. We received input from over 5,600 residents and stakeholders, all of whom had their own vision. Our job now is to blend those ideas into something we can bring to life as a destination for not just Henderson, but all of Southern Nevada and the entire Mountain West region.

For a project of this scope, we’ve turned to a formula that has worked for us in the past. When establishing the Henderson Silver Knights as our hometown team with the Golden Knights organization, we pioneered a public-private partnership that resulted in two state-of-the-art facilities: America First Center on Water Street and The Dollar Loan Center arena. Both facilities serve as economic drivers for our City, bringing in numerous other professional sports teams, entertainment opportunities and much more. We look forward to taking the same successful approach with the Fiesta Henderson site to provide recreational amenities to East Henderson through a promising public-private partnership.

The Fiesta Site is just one of the bold moves we are making here in Henderson. We recently completed a data-driven Target Industry Study and identified five industries that can prosper in our City, including Back-Office Management and Support Services, Electrical Equipment and Components Manufacturing, Financial, and Credit Services, Logistics Management and Technologies, and Media and Sports Production.

Using our Strategic Plan as a blueprint for our future success, we annexed 850 acres of land in Eldorado Valley to complement our continued growth, and have invested in the careers of tomorrow by partnering with the College of Southern Nevada to open the Center of Excellence for advanced manufacturing training.

Planning for the future takes decisive action today. When we look back at Henderson decades from now, we will be proud of our bold planning that contributes to the award-winning quality of life right here in Henderson.
